The general feeling I get off of this board is that DIs last ~ 100,000mi or 8 yrs. On my old 9k and 900 I would have changed the distributor cap and rotor 4 times and replaced the plug wires twice. Minimum. Doing it myself I'd have over $200 into the system. You can buy a new DI for $100-300 from sponsors on this board. Takes 5 min to change. If you have someone else do the cap and rotor you'll be up more than double my estimate.
My point is that even though the DI is a big hit when it comes, I think the overall cost is pretty much a wash. When you consider the sophistication and performance that the DI provides the engine management, then I think the DI is a big plus. Care to frequently change plugs and use dielectric grease on the DI boots may extend average life considerably.
My own experience is a dead DI on my '95 Aero at 80k, and my '95CSE is still going strong at 130k. I wouldn't consider changing.
