There has been some discussion on this board that the auto is good for ~100k mi. With care some are going twice the distance, some less. Lots of discussion about the auto, with some having few problems, and some feeling it should go longer. It costs around $3000 to replace, so you may want to factor that into your expenses. Of course a clutch lasts about as long, and it costs around $1000 to replace because the tranny needs to be dropped, and the slave is inside the bell housing and needs to be replaced at the same time. Just a consideration....
I had both the C900 and 9000, 3 9ks actually, and find the 9k to be a better driving car. Very nice handling, tremendous road car to the point of being boring, and lots of space if you get the hatch. Agree with the '95 and later suggestion, as improvements were made.
The 9000 is more complicated than the 900, and repairs can be steep. I would have the car checked thoroughly by a knowledgeable Saab tech, preferably an indy who knows these cars inside and out.
You may also want to consider the 9-5. I've heard very nice things about these models, and the auto is robust. With some hunting, you should be able to pick up a good 2000/2001 coming off lease for $12-20,000. I too would stick with the 4cyl for this or the 9000.
