'95 CSE H/K Factory Stereo Q's

I need to Change the balance and fade on my stock Harmon/Kardon head unit/s. I've got an EQ button with a + and - to either side on the upper radio/tape portion, and they seem to do nothing, holding them down, pressing them madly, swearing at them, ect.
I understand that the speaks on the '95 CSE are 4" in the front and 6x9" in the back, each with an additional tweet i could ignore if i was replacing them, i'm also suffering from the dread buzz, but i seem to have temporarily resolved that by going in through the ashtray.
There is also a noise, that i swear sounds just like Ecco the dolphin surfacing/diving with more bass when i switch radio presets and a few other things, i know that sounds bizzare as all get out, but that's what it sounds like! A kind of white noisey thump, almost always two right in a row.
But right now i'm frustrated because the 4"s are way too loud and i cant hear the rear speaks contribution, enough for my liking anyway. In my c900 i had a JVC headunit and some JVC rears and, those little blue ones up front...Blaupunkts, yeah, that's the ticket. Anyway, i had the stereo sounding so well balanced from my seat that this is annoying me right to death.
Thanks for any help in advance!
