Buck, come in, Mayday, Mayday! I'm on the verge of hating my fine Swedish piece of ... automobile, when along comes a possible solution that none of my expert mechanics know of? Well, well...
My '95 9KCS developed this problem on the way home from the shop, where it had just gotten $500 worth of loving care with what surely must be a lifetime exhaust system, given its age and mileage (114,000). Instead of the pride of ownership I deserved, I was perplexed by this problem, which seemed unrepairable at any decent expense. I was given estimates of $1200 to $3000 for the fix, depending on how much clutch & tranny work was encountered along the way, while we removed and dismantled the transmission! Since the transmission works well and the clutch is just 55,000 miles old, I was faced with all that just to repair a lousy speedometer. Nuts!
I can live without a speedometer. The odomoter seems more essential, since it's needed for tracking deductable business mileage and scheduled maintenance, as well as following where I am on the map. I need a speedo for the cruise control, too, and I just paid last fall to get that fixed. Since the moment the speedo went out the car's not idling reliably, stalling on deceleration. It's a bummer. I'd love to hear that this is a cheap way out of my problem. Tell me, buck-- does it work with a 1995, or only with the older version of the 5-speed? Or are you talking about automatic transmissions?
I've hung in there through a $3500 repair year, including a head gasket failure at just 80,000 miles, but this is the most discouraging & exorbitant repair yet. Would anyone want to buy a nice car in this shape?
