Sorry, I don't think there are any cheap shortcuts for this problem, though I wasn't too proud to call five shops to ask. The transmission must come apart and asunder, so they have to dismantle most of the car surrounding it. I've been told it takes from 9 to 11 hours labor to get it onto a bench. On the way, I'll have to do a preventive clutch job 20 or 30 thousand miles prematurely, I reckon.
I thought about getting by without a speedo too, for about a day. Then, as my car was stalling after every deceleration from top gear, the next shoe dropped. I lost linkage to all my odd-numbered gears. So something has to be done. The car's too nice to part out. I'm ready to get out of the SAAB scene forever, but I can't afford to trade for anything that's likely to be more reliable. So watch ebay for my sacrifices: Two inflatable kayaks, an electric scooter and a vintage Gibson archtop electric guitar. When they're gone, I wonder how much pride of posession I'll have in a speedometer that works and a car that has all its gears. I wonder...
