Hi John,

Keep me posted as to what you find out- I did some more research into the problem. When I brought my car to the dealer they said that the "differential contact" to the "speedometer gear" was stripped, and that they would have to open up the gear box to fix it. They also said that the part it connects to can fall into the transmission and gum up the works, so maybe that is what happenned with your odd numbered gears,
but I'm not sure what part they may have been referring to.

The two parts that may be effected are these:
9000 94-98 Speedo Drive Gear 8748311
9000 92-98 Speedometer Sensor that screws into trans (OES) 4083804

As far as replacing the "sender unit" aka the "speedometer sensor unit" that attaches to the transmission has no moving parts inside the transmission itself. On the other hand, from pictures that i saw online when I was researching this, it appears there are two attachment locations for the speedometer sensor part to the tranny, so maybe one of them has a gear.

Also, does your car stall on deceleration? I am wondering whether this is a symptom of the speedometer problem or a bad turbo bypass valve (hooter valve).
