AT removal discovery--possible failure explanation

I posted last week some questions about removing an auto tranny from my 91 9000S, which I had bought to fix up for my wife (a mechanic who worked on it told me that the governor seals were the problem). I replaced the governor seals, with no result. After much research, and talking to Erikson's, I concluded that the problem is either the C brake band (inside the transmission), or the servo piston that engages the brake band. Both repairs require the transmission removed from the car.
I didn't get the transmission out this weekend (other bits of life sorta interfered), but I did make a discovery when disconnecting the inlet and outlet hoses from the tranny. THEY LOOP TOGETHER! In other words, someone bypassed the ATF cooler and had the fluid go right back into the tranny!
Question #1: Is this what toasted the brake band in the first place?
Question #2: Is a new ATF cooler in my future?
Question #3: What other damage could have been done by this "fix"?
Thanks in advance for all your help--you've been invaluable so far.
