Again, without my parts manual, I'm not sure when Saab discontinued the thermostat. Sounds like it was before the '91s.
Saab also did go to a separate oil cooler - the earlier cars had an integral radiator/oil cooler, and it made for a nasty recall. Again, without looking it up in a manual, I'm never quite sure when the change was made.
It sure sounds like a fresh (or at least newer) oil cooler is in order. You'll also need lines from the cooler to the tranny. Keep that in mind when you order them - there's the two line set (tranny to oil cooler, directly). You don't want an older set, that would get you only to the thermostat (which you don't have). The cost of these lines is pretty breathtaking - I haven't priced them recently, but $200 for the pair isn't out of the question. If you have the time, you might look into having a set made up by a speed shop somewhere. That would save you a bunch of money.
