As to why they did it, I've got a few guesses-
I've seen the hoses leak. Perhaps they decided to remove the leaky hose, and just make the loop. The second would be the thermostat. I don't have my parts manual at hand right now, but earlier cars had a thermostat in the line between the oil cooler and tranny. It was a lump of metal mounted to the lower crossmember just behind the radiator - it has four fittings. I know Saab eliminated it in later years, and I'm not sure if it was still in '91. The thermostat would leak, and a new one was about $250. Saab recommended simply bypassing the thermostat, and provided a kit (new hoses) to that effect. You still had an oil cooler. Perhaps the last owner did the loop bit to avoid the leaking thermostat.

Of course, the last possibility is a leaky oil cooler. That could be due either to a hole in it, leaking tranny fluid out, or a leak between it and the radiator. If the latter were true, they'd have had to flush the cooler and then plugged the output lines, or the radiator would leak out through the open holes. Look at the oil cooler - is it plugged? Do you have a thermostat?

Now, the hard part - is that what toasted the tranny? Well, it didn't help. A hotter running tranny isn't going to last longer, that's for sure. However, the automatic on the 9000 isn't exactly known for longevity, so a failure isn't a surprise.

So - what else is toasted? Again, it's hard to say - the transmission tends to die after 80-100K miles even with a plumbed in oil cooler. Is it the original tranny? If so, at 170K miles, it owe you nothing. (I assume those are miles, and not Kms.) If I had it out and open, I'd think of replacing the clutches at least. The Eriksson folks can provide guidance.

If the tranny is pretty fresh (less than 50K or so), replace what's wrong, but inspect the wheee out of it. Look for wear on the clutches and splines. I'd say that even if the oil cooler was right.
