I'll start off with this-
I've used Bars Leaks for over a decade with a variety of my Saabs, and have never had a cooling-system related problem from it. Period. I find it works great on minor heater core leaks. Does it extend the life of other cooling system components? I can't tell - how do you know something lasted longer?
OK, so why are they saying to avoid it like the plauge? Good question, but I can guess. There are many cooling system additives that are short-term solutions to 90% dead cars. Yes, they'll plug a leak, but they'll also plug your radiator. These exist for keeping that clunker on the road for another couple of months, until it's sold. Not ethical, but there it is. That's probably what folks are thinking about, and lumping Bars Leaks in with them.
Remember Zerex antifreeze? They used to have a ad where someone holed a radiator with an awl, and the leak went from pour to nothing in about 15 seconds. Very impressive. Notice that they don't sell it anymore? That stuff would clog systems. It also could handle big holes. Bars Leaks works because it doesn't try and fix ruptured lines - just the microcracks that form in heater cores, and the microleaks at hose/nipple interfaces.
So are they wrong? Well, yes. They're thinking about something else, and broadly applying it to everything. Ask them how many have personally had a clogged heater valve due to using Bars Leaks. Not from using something else, or based on the word of their brother-in-law's barber's son's mechanic.
Heck the same is true of turbos. I mean, doesn't everyone know that they're unreliable? That goes back to the early turbocharging of the mid-70's to early '80's. Many manufacturers bolted turbos onto otherwise unsuspecting engines to recover performance lost to new emissions rules. Lots of power, and many, many cases of engine parts scattered over the highways and byways. Heck, even Saab's first turbocharged car had some issues - head gaskets in the '79 99T, and the reason for dual cooling fans for a while. That wasn't because turbos are unreliable -it's because not doing proper engineering is a recipe for disaster. Nowdays turbos are common, and I'll bet many folks with turbo cars don't even know they've got a turbo. Yet the perception in most folks minds when they hear Turbo is "Power" and "Boom." Even smart people.
