Oh, Dread! Beat your breast and tear your hair. That's the same SAAB story I heard from my mechanic last Thursday. The car needs data from the speedo to manage idle and boost properly. If the differential gear that drives the cable is worn, it has to be replaced from the inside out. But thank your lucky stars and your kindly mechanic. I've been quoted $900, $1200 and $2500 (dealer) for the speedo fix alone. On the way, you'll probably want to put in a new clutch, maybe a slave cylinder, and scrutinize the transmission for wear. The maximum estimates I got were ranges topping out at $2500 to $4000.
Are you sick yet? I'm reaching for the antacids. It makes me scheme once more about what other car could replace my 9000. There aren't many good choices, but I did confirm that Subaru Foresters take speed data from a magnetic sensor that's cheap and easy to fix. SAAB's speedo snafu is like something you'd expect from a Jaguar or an Alfa.
Oddly, while I was sweating over my choices and wondering how long I could drive without speedo or reliable idling, my shift linkage broke the next day! Left me with 2nd and 4th, the typical coupler failure. I figure now I'm $200 into the repair cost just to fix that.
Please, who offered to R&R a tranny and fix the speedo drove for under $700? I'm heading to the mechanic tomorrow and I need some bargaining power. I was told by two sources that it's 10-12 hours labor to move the tranny from the car to the bench and back again. I await your reply.
