Hi All,
So I had this exact same problem. I talked the mechanic at dirito brothers saab in walnut creek, ca at length about this. This problem
seems to be limited to a batch of the 1994/1995 saab 9000s. My speedo
gear in the transmission disintegrated and the part needed to be
replaced. Additionally, the disintegrated plastic gear can get
stuck in your gear box and cause things to suddenly stop working,
until the rest of it gets chewed up by the tranny. So, as
part of the deal the mechanic needs to clean out all the leftover
chewed up plastic parts. Unfortunately, given the california labor
costs the whole deal cost about $1500. The replacement part is
supposedly sturdier but still not made out of metal.
Anyhow, I don't mind paying the money because the dealer had
actually fixed this problem for other people before, and have
also worked on quite a few transmissions to boot. So I didn't
mind paying a little extra to have the dealer to the work in
this case.
With that said, this repair is up (on the arg list) there with
the ignition cartridge failure that happened to me last year.
Seems like a poor design to have something so critical to
keeping the engine running properly not using some sort of
easily replaceable, purely electronic sensor (i.e. without
moving parts inside the transmission). Seems like they
could also have figured out how to idle the engine properly
without the input from the sensor, but what do i know...
Good luck to all- looks like I'll be holding on to my 9000
for a few more years after all...
Tom
