...which is to remove a lug nut and look at its bottom. If it's made contact with anything while rotating around, it should have a nice clean polished look to it.
By the way, that's my guess as to the root of your problem, after reading your description of the sound. I don't THINK you'd be making contact with the ABS sensor as that is stuck inside the hub itself; and if you were making contact with the plastic body from which the sensor's lead sprouts, I'd guess that the sensor would have long since gone kaplooie and thrown up an ABS warning light. However, I can't remember what's behind the hub, and if you find evidence that the lug has made contact with something, I'd recommend removing a wheel and having a look.
You might be able to have someone grind a little bit off ends of the lugs in that case to prevent this contact from happening again. Are you still waiting for the proper spacers for the wheels, by the way? Might that be your problem? If so, I'd suggest getting new lug nuts for the rears once the new spacers come in, if you've had the old ones ground down.
I don't think it would be advisable to put any kind of spacer between the wheel and lug nut flange, either, as this would alter the torque distribution of the lugs and/or cause wheel damage.
