Are early (-'86-'92) 9000 seats better than '93-'98?

I am in the process of parting a 1992 9000 Turbo with 200,000 miles and leather seats... while sitting in the drivers' seat of this car, I started to think that these seats, even with 200,000+ miles and torn seams, are more comfortable than the seats on my '97. My fiancee thinks the same; I'm wondering are we imagining this, or is it valid: were the seats on the early cars really better? I'd be especially interested in hearing the views of people who have owned 9000's from different years.
On a second note, since I'm not a fan of leather, I would like to know if anybody has had seats re-upholstered? I was thinking of replacing the center part of the seat and back with Alcantara, and reusing the rest. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks in advance!
