Great cars, plenty of problems though... Posted by Daven [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 91 Saab 9000T pre-purchase, Pat, Sun, 2 May 2004 22:10:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hey pat...
I have two of these cars, a red '91 and a black '92, both 5spds. Owning two stems from my long-time love affair, adoring them from afar. From the first time I saw a '91-'92 9KT, I fell in love with them; the two-tone Aero wheels, gorgeous 9000 looks and a positively mennacing stance. And they are fast! They maintain the earlier 9000's close-mated gear ratios but receive a bigger engine with a quick-spooling turbo. It has been said that their actual stock HP rating is around 215 and not the claimed 200. To this day, the '91s are arguably the fastest Saabs on the road.
I say this because the '92s were often plagued by Saab's TCS (Traction Control System) which essentially places a choke-hold on the engine when the front wheels break loose even slightly (not fun, especially when you upgrade your engine for more spirited driving). 3 years ago, I bought my '91 from a loving owner who also paid out the A$$ to have the car maintained by a dealer. The car was in mint cond., had 128k miles and was scary fast. Less than a month after owning the car, the problems started. Three years later, I've invested more than $16,000 in it's maintenence. After each repair I figured nothing else could possibly go wrong. I didn't learn my lesson though so, almost a year ago, I bought a black '92 with TCS.
Among it's recent repairs are: the radiator, all cooling hoses, fan assembly, headlights, foglights, windshield, antennea, radio, ceiling & sunroof headliner, turbo wastegate, alternator, heater core, and all A/C components. Keep in mind that it has been 9 months, the car has 140k (started with 124k) and the A/C still acts up/... and I just found that I have two leaks in my hatch.
I'm never going to get rid of these cars, even if I were to buy a new car, which would definitely be a 9000. I sound like a fool, or a hopeless gambler who believes his luck is just about to change, but I'll hold on no matter what the cost.
In closing, these are costly cars but they are so much fun!!! I'm not trying to talk you out of it, just letting you know what you're getting in to. If you know how to wrench though, you can save yourself considerable cash. Sorry for rambling...
Best wishes,
-Daven
