I had similar problems with my 94 CS, I did it the 'traditional' way with the axle on the car, but it took 2 of us, one holding the snap ring open and the other tugging on the hub. The weird thing is that we tried and tried for over an hour, couldn't figure out the problem (snap ring open and sliding in the groove) and then all of a sudden it just came apart. Both sides were like this, lots of tugging and swearing and then 'voila' it just comes apart.
You're right though, before it comes apart you would swear that it is fused on somehow. Next time the axle comes out and George's procedure seems to make sense. In my experience some of the 'more easy' things on my 9000 have been the most frustrating.
