OK, I admit to being a former engineer! And to reengneering various items to make them better. I have a big roll of bicycle brake cable housing, and I recall that it cost about $10 vs. the $100 that SAAB will charge for two plastic tubes. Just an idea if someone is looking to fix their own, I do not know what the inner diameter of the plastic tubing is, so you need to verify.
My guess is that by using plastic instead of cable housing they must have saved about $1 per car, a few grams of weight, and it lasts well past the warranty period. I have associates that supply parts to the auto manufacturers, and you would not believe what the manufacturers do to save a few pennies here and there. Then they offer $5000 rebates, go figure!
