Good minds think alike! Which one typically lasts longer? My guess is the steel version, but there is a reason that they sell replacement bike cables too - they stretch and they get corroded if used in the rain. There are even higher quality axial multistrand cables that are used for the deraileurs on index-shifted bikes, these hardly stretch at all
Sounds like the one on Volvo (at least) can absolutely be substituted with cheap, readily available bike brake cable housing and cable (how many zillion bikes are made in China per year?). If you are going to make this a regular habit, be sure to buy a $20 cable cutting tool to cut it to the right size without bunging up the cable.
