I wouldn't think that any buildup would cause a fault in this, since it is a temperature sensor. It would just make it respond more slowly. The ECU would have to detect and out of range resistance to report an error, which probably means open or short circuit, although I guess the sensor might actually "go wrong".
Anyway, you can test this sensor. The resistance at certain temps is specified, so using a thermometer, an ohmmeter (multimeter), some ice and some hot water, you can check it. I've done it successfully.
