you may have to use it. I did the last time to remove the valve gasket. I apologize if I scared you from DIY. No. You don't have to use the engine lift. I did it only because the drivetrain is out and under the lift. So it is conveniently used to lift the cover by hooking it to the cover.

But if you think replacing the valve cover gasket is a piece of cake, you are mistaken. Most likely you have to run a thin razor blade around the cover to remove it. The gasket has been baked into the head through heat. Don't forget to use blue silicone at the low point and the two semi-circular recess on the head.
