It is a DIY job. Usually takes me about an hour. Most of the time is spent cleaning the old gasket off the valve cover and the top of the head. If it comes away clean, it goes very fast.

Things to get -
New valve cover gasket
New upper chain guide - this is a rubber block that mounts on the underside of the valve cover, and, well, guides the timing chain. You don't mention how old your car is, but if it's over 10 years old, I'd replace the guide, as it's probably dried out by now.
Gasket sealant - I like using Loctite 518
Gasket cement - this is a thin goop that holds a gasket in place. Useful for keeping the gasket from falling off the valve cover when you put it on.
Low-reading torque wrench - Most 'click' type torque wrenches don't go down to 11 foot-pounds. I picked up an inexpensive (under $20) 'beam' type torque wrench for the low level stuff.
Razor blades and Scotchbrite - for cleaning off the old gasket material.

Not a hard task, just take your time getting a nice, clean surface, and avoid getting gasket bits into the oil still sitting in the head. Of course, you can let a mechanic do it - do you think he'll be quite as careful cleaning the head? That he'll do quite as good a job cleaning the surfaces?

Apply a liberal bead of 518 around the gasket. The manual says only to put it around the lower corner, and where the cut-outs are. I like to put it entirely around, but that's me.
