Yes, welcome to the board! I usually agree w/everything Ari says and his comments about the automatics wont get any argument from me. However, I must say that I do know people that have modified their automatic 9000's and with care in both maintenance and driving techniques, they have withstood torque increases. In particular, jj who posts regularly, gets around 290 ft-lbs of torque w/his modified automatic Aero, and has not had a problem, yet, with well over 100k miles. He changes his atf (M1) every 10k and never does full throttle upshifts (he knows the shift-points and rolls his foot off the loud-pedal when it's about to upshift). However, if you want to convert to a manual, I've done this procedure, myself, and it's not that difficult. In fact, used 5 speed transaxles are relatively cheap (about $700 at local salvage yards, the last time I looked), and the hardest aspect is changing the pedal assembly. Because you have a 'long block', you can only use transaxles up to '93, and the '93 has a taller final drive (3.61:1 as opposed to 4.05:1 in the '91-'92's). So, if you're serious about auto-xing, you'd probably wan't to go with a '91-'92.
Computers: yes, there are more than two in that vehicle, but only two are used for engine management. The LH box's essential function is to control fueling. The DI/APC box, which is located beside the LH box in the drivers' side of the 'aquarium', controls the ignition, the BPC solenoid, and also sends info' to the instrument panel, as does the LH, too. Anyway, good luck w/your new toy!
