Well, a little background info from me before my question.
I am considering the purchase of a 1992 9000 CD Turbo w/Automatic transmission. I hope to use it as a daily driver with modifications for autocrossing. The springs are beginning to sag so I had planned to replace the struts and springs, as anyone would. What would be a decent combination for autocrossing? I plan to replace the sway bars and then put together polyurethane engine mounts.
For the age of the engine, with 142k miles, I would like to replace the DI-cartridge as well as the transmission filter, and transmission fluid which the current owner can't recall the last time any of these items were replaced. I am also surprised that the turbocharger is in the strong shape that it is. The engine responds nicely after opening the throttle 50%. The transmission is giving me the most concern. Firtly, the lockup solenoid failed to disengage while I was coming to a gentle stop. The engine struggled and nearly stalled before returning to normal. I was told that this was once a persistant problem that only occassionally occurs. I then noticed that the engine has trouble with warm starts while the engine is hot. My assumptions lead me to the starter or the ignition system. The transmission also vibrates heavily when shifting from second to third and sometimes feels as if it skipped third all together, even through the RPMs show no change. I am not sure what this is, and if I could fix it.
If I could resolve these transmission problems I think I would love the vehicle. The car belongs to a family member who loves it to death even though it's condition is deteriorating rapidly. The air-conditioning isn't working at this time, the headliner is sagging, the headlight wipers were leaking fluid and promptly removed. I've driven the car when it was 15k miles younger and the turbo spooled like a champ. None of the problems were present and the wheels could be broken loose, almost at will.
I have some experience working with aging behemoths, I once owned and worked on a BMW 635CSi. The 9000 seems very similar in it's need of attention an maintainance. I'd really like a standard transmission, but this seems like a good opportunity to purchase a SAAB cheaply. I'm drawn by rumors that the 92 2.3L Turbo was underrated by SAAB. I would have liked to apply megasquirt to this car but I'm not sure how to integrate the DI-cartridge. LH2-Jetronic doesn't scare me, but I heard that the SAAB 9000 has two onboard computers. Is their any truth to that, and what do they control?
Thank you for any help, advice, or best wishes I may receive. I enjoy the support that these online groups can provide and the knowledge that is shared among enthusiasts. Best wishes to all of you.
