Welcome to the fold.
The good news is that the Saab engine is pretty tough, and a '92 turbo is a pretty fast beast. The not so good news is the tranny.
The ZF autobox in the 9000 was always a weak link. It's not uncommon for an autobox to toast itself after about 80-120K miles. That's not bad for a car, but folks expect more mileage out of a Saab. Replacing the tranny fluid and filter is no big deal - the filter is accessable from underneath. Like most trannies, you can't drain all of the fluid without dissasembly - most folks will drain and refill, run for a week or so, and repeat. Three times is usually good for a complete replacement. Or you can find a place that does a power flush.
From the symptoms you describe, it could be a dirty valve pack, a broken accumulator spring, shot govenor seals, or all of the above. The valve body just lifts off the top and springs are pretty easy to replace. Govenor seals can be replaced with the tranny in the car.
However, you've got vibration, and the tranny isn't very young. And it appears the fluid wasn't changed regularly. I would worry that, in general, the tranny is ready to go out. Hate to see you put a lot of work into the tranny, and then have a clutch pack go, or a gear spline shear. If you really want to keep it running, I would consider replacing the tranny. A new (rebuilt) one is about $3K installed from Eriksson. Get to know them well, if you have transmission issues. Or you can do an auto-to-manual conversion - check the archives.
I would not suggest doing any engine performance improvements with the existing tranny. It sounds like it's on the last legs. And a brand new tranny is marginal to begin with - extra power is not a great idea.
If you want to soup it up, think about installing a manual tranny.
Getting a spare DI isn't a bad idea, but if this one works, toss it into the trunk. New ones die, too.
