Saabs 9000s have a very sophisticated anti detonation system, so they tolerate wide variations in fuel quality. They also make better power with better gas, so I envy people in the midwest who can still get 93 octane fuel.
Your father may have read one of those 'Consumers' articles about premium fuel being a waste of money. My wife is constantly quoting those articles to me. Those articles should have a footnote that reads 'except for Saabs'.
When the price of gas gets out of hand in California she'll occasionally run a tank of regular in her '96 Aero. I've noticed no long term ill effects, other than the car doesn't have it's usual zip.
