I too purchased an econo-beater while saving the money to fix my Saab, an '81 Datsun 310 for $500. Really abused that thing and it still got in the mid-upper 30's for MPG and never broke on me. I only drove it a few months though, basically worked major overtime to save the money for the 9000.
I did have a lightened flywheel put in, but it was not that much lighter, I think 16-17 pounds vs stock 21. You can get aluminum flywheels I believe, but they are much more expensive. I never drove the car with a stock flywheel, so can't really say the difference, but mine is certainly plenty driveable on the street. I had a 9000 Aero clutch put in, seemed to hold fine up to about 200HP/240lb/ft torque to the ground as the dyno measures. I am not running that much power anymore, though.
