Driving home from a friend's picnic. My brother, his wife (in from out of town), my girlfriend are with me when the car starts to run "funny" and I calmly tell everyone the car is dying and pull off an exit ramp. We coast into a parking lot. Car will start, sputter, and die. I call a friend to come pick everyone up and call AAA. Triple AAA guy comes out and he is NOT happy about having to tow me 25 miles home. He asks me if there is gas in the car and I say "Yeah, half a tank". He loads me up and tows me home. Bitches the whole way about missing dinner with his daughter and shaking like he needs a little "pick-me-up".

Next day, take off work, decide that the fuel pump is shot and needs to come out. After cursing in the back of the car for an hour, the pump comes out and - BLAMO!!!! - the tank is empty!! Son of a BITCH!! At least I saved myself the cost of a new pump. But man what a painful way to find out you're out of gas.

Next time the car won't run, first put in half a gallon of gas and see if that fixes it!! I have added this to my long list of "Idiot Checks".
