Quasi's write-up is for a '91

Why invite extra expense to the process unless needed (A/C evacuation/recharge)? The most awkward act for the driveway mechanic while removing the blower is resting your chest on the DI and releasing the latches. I don't think removing the evaporator housing allows you to avoid that step. The bungees really come in handy at that point.
It is a challenging task the first time in. Long skinny screwdrivers really help while 'blindly' trying to relocate the latch releases for the motor housing. I remember needing them to hold the latches open while using two hands to rotate the assembly out. Whoever said it was a 'rite of passage' was correct.
I took mine out and reinstalled it over a year ago because it ran fine directly off the battery. Bad contacts on the power leads to my blower motor controller have been the issue. For those who don't suspect a coolant leak and only have blower problems I suggest the following:
Prior to 'going in', hot-wire the blower fan to the battery; the motor may not be your problem. The transistor repair is well documented by Quasi, but I found the contacts of the M/F power connection to my controller to be bad (after having done one transistor replacement). I have since removed the plastic 4 wire cable connector/harness and individually plugged each cable into the controller. My fan runs faster as a result of this. One day I'll recrimp the two black power cables to effect a more professional repair and hopefully have the fan run at optimal speed.
