In a brief lapse of judgment, and partly because I have been reading this wonderful board way too much, I have bought a 97 CSE 2.3 (auto) to replace my beloved but aging 90 2.0 (auto) Turbo. That 200 hp 2.3 is quite a step up in smoothness and power from the 2.0.
But there are, of course, some "issues" (what else is new):
(1) Tires -- the Pirellis on the CSE have little life left. What tires do people like on this car? I have Michelin MXV4s on the 90, which are fine, but not very exciting and a bit noisy.
(2) I don't much like the plain 3-spoke wheels (no Saab badge in the middle). What should I expect to spend for new wheels (I'd prefer 3-spokes with the badge)? Should I be talking to junkyards? I've never shopped for wheels.
(3) There's that good old whiff of coolant from the heater. I assume I'm in for a new heater core (though the prior owner says he replaced it once, and car has only 62K on it).
(4) Carpeting. There is a hole in the carpet (not the floor mat) below the accelerator pedal. Are these things hard to repair? Any idea what a full carpet replacement should cost (the rest of it is worn as well)? By the way, I was surprised to see that the space under the rear seats isn't fully carpeted on this car unlike my 1990 (hope this isn't some sort of problem!).
(5) Radio. I like the Clarion and full equalizer in the 1990 (even though it doesn't have a CD player) better than the HK in the 1997. Anybody know if it's easy or hard to switch them?
As always, thanks for any input. Guess I will be reading this board a while longer...
