Regarding the coolant odor, I would try to look for other causes or solutions before doing ANOTHER heater core. Check that all of the cooling system hose connections are tight, including the six heater hose clamps inside the "aquarium" - the previous work may have loosened over time or the clamps may not have been tightened fully. Look for some telltale signs of leakage, i.e. pale blue (or whatever color your antifreeze is) powdery residue at the joints. My car had an incorrectly installed thermostat with a tiny gasket leak, got the same antifreeze odor in the car.
Though some will disagree, I recommend trying Bar's Leak in the silver plastic bottle, accept no substitutes! It's good at sealing microcracks in the heater core, radiator and hose junctions. If the previous owner really installed a new heater core, it should not fail so soon, although some new ones have had almost immediate failure.
As far as I know, the wiring harnesses (the connectors at least) are different for the HK radio system vs. the older Clarion/SAAB system. You could easily pull out the head units in both of your cars and look, just make sure that you have the radio codes. If different, it will require major work to adapt the old radio and CD/Equalizer to the new car. You may want to try cleaning the connectors of your current HK system (using contact cleaner spray) before you write it off.
