They can be high maintenance. I bought my 94 a few years ago with around 100k miles and have replaced the blower motor (needed) and heater core (because I was in there already) and done a valve job because the head gasket failed. My latest malady is a failed fuel pump. Also, the passenger seat doesn't adjust properly because of a broken cable. I understand that the DI Cassette can go after 100k miles, but mine is still OK.
All that said, I love my Aero! The driving experience is like no other car, and most newer cars these days are the product of international conglomeration. The pure Swede is a joy to drive. And as with any machine, if you maintain it properly, it will last a long time. I also own an 87 9KT with almost 200K, and I've been driving it daily for the last 3 months (the Aero still needs a fuel pump; I'm getting to it...). It gets 24 mpg and can go on 50 mile jaunts at 80 to 85 mph sustained speeds without a complaint. My Aero did the same until the fuel pump horked.
The main advice is that a well maintained car will be a jewel, but a car that has been abused will be a lump of coal. The lump of coal can be returned to jewel condition if you have the resources and are willing to commit, and the driving experience of an Aero is hard to beat.
