There's no down side to switching to synthetic oil at any mileage. I have a '95CDE that I bought at 89000 that I immediately switched to Mobil 1 5-30W. It's now at 173000. I also switched the auto trans to Mobil 1 ATF. The trans is still smooth at that mileage. I did the same with my '98CSE. My practice with any used car purchase is to treat it like the previous owner(s) didn't do anything! I take the weekend and change ALL the fluids, ALL the filters, ALL the belts, spark plugs, and ALL radiator hoses. I change pads and rotors if necessary while changing the brake fluid to DOT 4. This way you baseline the car and know what your maintenance cycle is. It's cheap insurance.
