It would be my thought that the pump was leaking before, but it wasn't noticed. The drip probably dried up before it got to the ground.
I built a tool for the first S-belt removal, but I don't bother anymore. I just use the breaker bar, and slip the belt off the idler pulley (not the tensioner). Then the pump is easy to do. Remove the wheel arch fender inner-liner to access it. I once did a 9000 water pump from above, without removing the inner-liner. DOn't know why, but I did. Much easier to remove the liner.
