A year ago I practiced putting in a timing chain on an engine at a Saab Tech Session, under the watchfull eye of John Moss. Yes, with a stock Saab guide, you need to pull the head. It seems like you could almost make it work, but alas, you can't (with stock). If Saab had made that pin removable, it would be cake.
The all plastic one that I see on the eEurparts website looks less stiff mostly because it doesn't have a piece of aluminum on the back. I have heard folks say that it will go on.
It's a $25 part. My advice is to try and install it with the head on. Use a tool to bend it if necessary. If it goes on, great - you've avoided a lot of hassle, and the expense of a new head gasked, head bolts, etc. If it breaks, you're out $25, and know that you need to either find an even more flexible one, or you need to pull the head. But given the hassle of pulling the head if you don't need to, I'd try and make it fit.
Now, I have heard that it's pretty darn hard to get the chain cover back on with the head in place. Some folks have managed to do it. I've heard of folks trimming the head gasket where it goes over the timing chain cover, and applying liberal amounts of sealant. But if you end up having to loosen the head to get the cover on, might as well go whole hog now and loosen it to get the guide into place.
Good luck!
