Hello Saabnet, I've had my car for almost 2 years now. A 1991 Saab 9000 CD turbo. It came with an auto but I have since converted it to 5-speed.
I've got a pretty good understanding of how the car works mechanically, but not electronically. Right now it's got a VERY wierd problem... About 4 months after completing the 5-speed conversion, it blew it's head gasket. I took the head off, had it resurfaced, put a new gasket back in, and put the head back in. After all that was done, I cranked it up. She ran fine for about a day (I ran it only in the garage for a while, then graduated it to a few 15 minute drives around the neighborhood). This is where it starts to get wierd. I decided to finally take the car into boost to make sure that was working properly. It got to 5 PSI as usual then hit a brick wall, threw a CEL, ran on 2 cylinders for 10 seconds then died, wouldn't start up again, just clicked the fuel pump relay. I assumed one of my injectors had screwed up (they were making a lot of noise), so I replaced them for a spare set. This fixed the problem. I then did a shorter break in procedure, ran it in the garage, then took it out. Stopped and started it many times before first taking it into boost. Opon taking it into boost, EXACT same thing happened. 5PSI and it kicks the bucket, same way as before. Except this time changing the injectors out didn't fix it!! All it does it click over the relay when trying to start it. The pump is not getting 12 volts. I have changed out the fuel pump just to make sure. The car will run on starter fluid for a few seconds, but won't provide itself with fuel. The only thing I did different from before was to hook up the stock APC system to control the turbo, the cheapo controller I had was the cause of the blown head gasket before. I belive this may have had something to do with the problem, the stock APC on automatics is made to limit boost depending on gear. I've been told it could be the overboost cut off switch acting up, or that I should "fix" the fuel pump relay so that it is always on. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
