...it's not the head gasket and boy am I happy 'bout that. I found the leak in the heater hose that enters the head. That explains the water loss. The "oil" in the coolant res is evidenced by a pink foam which sez trans fluid. Am I right in thinking the only possible site where this could occur is in the radiator. If all the above is correct, then I must conclude that there are two unrelated but concurrent failures. Anyone want to speak to that? Re: the heater hose..the failure is near the bell shaped enlargement in the hose that slips over a nipple from the head. Looks like a real chore to replace it as it disappears into the firewall. I'm considering splicing in a new section with a male-male pipe nipple realizing that I still have an "old" hose for the most part. Thoughts, please.
