Get thee to a mechanic!! Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Mon, 8 Nov 2004 09:55:40 In Reply to: Flickering oil light...?, Alex, Mon, 8 Nov 2004 09:46:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Two possibilities - low oil pressure, or a weak oil pressure sensor. If it's low oil pressure, the engine can be damaged severly by driving it.
The absolute first thing to do is get the oil pressure checked, by putting an oil pressure gauge into the system. I wouldn't even drive the car to a mechanic - I'd have it towed. It could be something as simple as a weak spring in the oil pressure regulator.
However - if it's been doing this for a week, and the engine isn't making any major clattering noises, then chances are it isn't too bad, and you could drive it a short distance to the mechanic. No side trips. That's because a sever problem would have killed the engine by now, or at least it would be making serious noises. However, if this just started, don't take the risk. Low oil pressure can kill an engine in seconds.
However, it could be as simple as a bad oil pressure sender. It's just that the downside (new engine) is pretty far down.
