it is a waste of money, trust me...
i posted a pic to show you what it looked like during the time it was briefly installed in my 1990 9000 turbo... which has the same dash layout as your 96...
in the photo you can see that i had the cupholder insalled in the lowest possible din slot.
this was mainly because of my stereo system at the time, which called for the use of two din slots, one for the tape player/controller, and the other for a cd player (slave unit to the tape player unit)
and the other reason was because when installed in the top two units, the try would extend with a slight angle... which made it sort of akward to remove the cups... push forward and remove...
not a big deal, but it's noticeable... and they LOOK like crap, they are cheaply made, and the coin tray would get stuck... and the coin holders didn't work very well, you couldn't get your money out. not any faster than digging for change in the door panels ;)
um... let's see, what else... it can only hold small size cups... and if you think you are going to fit a large capacity cup in the thing, that has a small size bottom end on it, then prepare yourself and your passangers for a splashing, because i doubt the tray can hold ANY real weight at all...
i would be nervous trusting it with more than 12-16 fl oz, which is no more than a soda can or bottle. some people like giant coffee mugs in the morning, this would not deal with one of those very well...
ok...
now...
i recommend the type of cup holder that fits inside of the empty cubby between the front seats.
that's what i switched over too... and i believe by that time that i switched, the first din cup holder had broken, enough to throw it away and not bother selling it! ;)
the one between the seats will hold the larger size drinks, and no worry of them spilling or moving... and you still have an area to put crap in, but it's more more easy to get at and organized...
i also like reaching down for my drinks, and being able to pull them up towards me and put them back down, without having to fumble for a tray, or fumble around the steering wheel or shifter...
seriously, if i haven't sold you yet, and if the comments of an avid beverage drinker who drives a 9000 and has experienced both worlds of cupholding hasn't swayed your opinion on these things, then by all means, spend your money and try it for yourself... but don't say you weren't warned...
this is an item number for the in cosole cup holder...
Item number: 7934471955
it is only $17 right now, and has a few days left... this is my last warning to you... buy this one and NOT the indash one...
