Looking for a second opinion...
I'm having this intermittent problem with my Aero. When the engine is warm, it often turns over but won't start. The battery is strong and the starter turns fine, but the engine immediately dies. Letting it sit for 10-20 minutes solves the problem until the next time I shut off when it usually happens again. Opening the hood seems to decrease the time necessary to wait.
This only happens after the car has been running for a while, e.g. when I drive 45 minutes or so and run into a store to do an errand. When I come back after 15-20 minutes, the car won't start.
A few other times the car has stalled while idling in traffic and I had the same problem when I tried to restart. Again, this happens when the engine has been running for 30 minutes or so. When this occurs, the engine often signals it is about to stall by dropping to a very low, rough idle. Pressing the accelerator has no effect. The only option is to shut down the engine and wait. This "low idle" condition also sometimes happens during warm re-start; it chugs along at low RPM and won't respond. If this happens, I have to turn it off again and wait.
My local dealer has already replaced the crank sensor and fuel filter, but the problem persists. He also temporarily swapped the DI cassette and that did not solve the problem. He suggested replacing the fuel pump next, but I'm hesitant as it is a big expense and it's not clear that will solve the problem.
Do you think this is the best next step? The price he gave me to replace the fuel pump is pretty much in line with what you said. Thanks.
