No, that sounds more like a failing CKP sensor. Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Thanks Anders, does this make sense to you?, Sharon, Sun, 21 Nov 2004 11:27:05 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The crank shaft position sensor have a tendency to become heat sensitive at the end of its life span.
You say they replaced the CKP sensor earlier, so that puzzles me a little bit.
What I would do if I had the car at my shop is to run the car with hood closed so that I get the engine compartment temperature up as hot as possible and hopefully make the engine stall.
Than I would disconnect the CKP harness and measure the resistance over pin 1 and 2 of the CKP sensor.
The resistance of a brand new sensor in your year/model should be 540 Ohm +-55 Ohm. If I would to see a reading of more than 1000 or way over that, I would be pretty sure I found the problem.
I would than wait until the resistance reading came back down (cooling down)to around the 500-600 range and hook the sensor back up to the car.
If the car starts, I'm 100% sure I found the problem.
After that I would also hook my lab scope up to the fuel pump feed wire and measure the amperage draw of the fuel pump. That way it would give me an insight of the status of fuel pump (just to be on the safe side).
It's nothing worse than fixing one problem just to have the car die in a couple of days because it was a second problem lingering, just waiting to fail.
I have stopped replacing parts (throwing parts at the car) in an attempt to repair them. I now try to measure my way to find the problem before I do any replacement. This can sometimes be a tedious procedure that takes a long time and the customer has to be understanding about that.
