I thought the same thing, but you should take a look at the "snorkel" thing attached to the airbox. It is there to reduce noise, but it also reduces the air opening from 3 to 2 or so inches. I removed just the snorkel, left everything else alone.
The noise increase is real, but not annoying at all, I like it. The real benefit I've noticed is a slightly 'freer' feeling, and for some reason the Psssssssschhh sound of blowoff is not happening nearly as much as it was.
I only touched the airbox because I was replacing my trans mount, it's not something I'd necessarily go out of my way to do. But it seemed like a darn good idea once I saw the design of the snorkel.
