Brian,
There are three ways to lose oil
- Oil leaking from engine externally (marks on ground)
- Car burning oil
- Head gasket leak allowing oil to get into the coolant
I have not had my 9000 long enough to know what normal oil consumption is for a 9000 with 100K miles. I have had my car blow out some smoke on startup but only twice. When valve seals go the usual symptom is oil coming out of the exhaust in the form of smoke at startup and/or off throttle. It is quite possible that you would not see this when driving.
You did not mention how many miles your car has but 1 quart / 3000 miles does not seem unreasonable for a high mileage car.
Rupert
