If your car was my old 1936 Oldsmobile or 1949 Mercury what you describe is the classic worn differential pinion gear or pinion gear bearing noise. In my experience wheel bearing or axle noise in Saabs will show large variations while turning one way versus the other. Unfortunatly, that leaves the transaxle. On the brighter side if it is the transaxle it will probably hold together for quite awhile. The noise will just gradually increase to unbearable levels.
Good luck. I hope I am wrong.
