trim plate of the shifter (is yours an auto or 5-speed ??) then reach under and see if you can push the assembly up from under. I haven't tried it but someone mentioned this is easier. I used the screw driver method 8-).
If you use a putty knife or screw driver method, do it from the front and back where the stronger tabs are. Put a piece or two of electrical tape on the surround so you don't scratch or dent the surrounding trim when you pry.
