Leap of faith Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: how do you remove the centre switch module?, TML ![]() ![]() |
You don't need to disassemble the console. If you remove the plate over the shifter, you can get a finger or two under the module and push up. Unless you do your weight lifting one finger at a time, I haven't had much luck with this approach - I can't seem to get enough push up to do much. And you get your hands all gooked up from the shifter grease, and get it all over the seats. Then your wife gets upset, and, oh yeah, the switchpack.
As Yaofeng says, a thin, flexible putty knife, not too wide (1 inch is good). You want to move the edges up pretty evenly around. I call it a leap of faith, because it feels like something is going to break in a very expensive way, and then the switchpack comes free. Expect to work at it for a few minutes.
Note that there are two approaches to a new bulb. The bulb is soldered in a special 1/4 turn plastic carrier. You can buy the new bulb/carrier assembly from the dealer. If you're handy with a soldering iron, you can unsolder the old, dead bulb, and solder in a new one. Radio Shack sells subminiature wire-lead bulbs, 12v / 60ma. These worked great for the old switches, where there was one bulb per switch. I've used them in the newer, single bulb per switchpack, and they work, but the lighting is a bit dim. It's acceptable, but you may want to find a slightly higher current bulb (90 or 100 ma - 1.2 watts).
