I used white lithium grease, because that's what appeared to be in the OEM mechanism when I disassembled it for the new eEuroparts mast. I squeezed some into the lower box and some onto the notched part of the mast as it retracted. The mast still sticks up about two incles and doesn't retract fully about 1% of the time. (Removing the unit to clean and apply an alternative lubricant is not on my priority list, since 99% isn't bad!)
