Curb weight isn't much different, according to the specs here on TSN.
These are for a '96 model:
CS auto: 3170 lbs
CS manual: 3110
CSE auto: 3220
CSE manual: 3280
Aero auto: 3240
Aero manual: 3310
Gearing may be another matter:
Final drive on a manual is 3.61:1 versus 4.28:1 on an automatic.
top gear is 0.70:1 on a stick and 0.74:1 on an autobox.
The final drive would certainly make a difference in mileage, but it seems it shouldn't be as great as people are seeing. Driving style probably enters into it, too. I imagine many of us here have somewhat heavy right feet! And in an automatic people may tend to press the pedal harder.
I have a '95 CS automatic joining the family soon, so it will be interesting to see what it gets for mileage.
