Oh boy, been there, done that, a bunch of times.
The labor involved in replacing the CV joint boot is about the same as replacing the CV joint, or the entire axle. The parts cost of just the boot is much less than the joint or axle. Of course, you don't want to do the job twice. So, you feeling lucky?
I go with (most) of the others. Replace the boot (repacking with proper grease, of course) and hope for the best. It's worked so far for me about three times. But in each of those three times, the joint itself was fairly clean. They haven't been great, into-pieces rips, and there wasn't a lot, or any, infiltration of water and dirt. Grabbing the boot showed that there was still some grease inside.
I have seen badly ripped boots, where there was minimal grease left and it was pretty easy to see (because the boot was so badly ripped) that the joint was contaminated with dirt. Thankfully, not mine. I would replace those joints. But if it's a small tear, and there is still some grease left in the boot, I would just replace the boot.
And don't be tempted by 'split' boots that don't require removing the axle. It's not that they don't work - they do - they just don't work for long.
