you really can find the right buyer
$1200 for a slave is definitely too much 6 hours labor plus $160 for the part is all that you should have been charged, if it included a new clutch, etc., then maybe...
check your receipt, i'm curious what the charges came from?
definitely find new mech, but that being said, i agree with other posts, sounds like you have a great car now. if you can develop a DIY ability, and find a cheap mech who will use your parts, they aren't expensive cars to keep.
but if you can't, and you need new brakes, you'll get ripped off for $500 a set (front or rear), for example.
it's stuff like that that cost me $3000 the first year I owned my 86 900S, more than I had paid for the car in the mid 90's (slave, clutch, alternator, tires...)
the cheapest car i had, $500 67 cutlass convertible. i had the frame welded (for safety, there wasn't much left) and body work/repaint (for looks), but never had an issue mechanically. all original. very cheap to maintain.
you could find a cheap ride, but chances are, cars these days break down and cost $$ to fix no matter what the brand
if you can't get $4000 for your saab, it might pay to keep it.
