Starting a car that's been sitting....

Forgive my non-9000-related post, but this could apply to a long-dormant 9000 as well, so here it goes (plus I trust the motorheads here to come up with a good answer).
I'll be taking on a free 95 Volvo 850 wagon with something like 265,000 miles, which has been sitting unstarted for the past six months or more (it's free, so I figure why not?). Just wondering what suggestions people might have for things to do before I attempt to start it for the first time.
I'm tempted to just turn the key and see what happens, while watching for the family of mice and/or raccoons to scramble out of every crevice. However, I'm aware that some might prefer that I first squirt some oil into the cylinders, and no doubt take some other precautions. What's everybody think?
